James Robert Wiley
(1872-1966)


 

        JAMES ROBERT WILEY was born January 01, 1872 in Cooke County, Texas, the son of Thomas Autrey Wiley and Nancy Ann Elizabeth Smith.  He married JULIA CAROLYN PHILLIPS, daughter of James Holbach Phillips and Margaret Day, October 31, 1894 in Saint Jo, Montague County, Texas.

        James was a well-known North Texas lawyer.  From 1899 to1900 James was mayor of Saint Jo, Texas.   In 1902, he served as City Attorney of Saint Jo.  From 1913 to1916, James served in the Texas State Senate from the 31st District and in 1915 he was president pro tempore of the State Senate.

         Mr. Wiley was editor and manager of the Saint Jo Argos Herald newspaper in the 1890's, and had written articles and letters for the Denton County Journal and Record Chronicle and the Dallas Morning News.  He organized banks in Saint Jo and Forestburg and was president of the Citizens' National Bank in Saint Jo.  He was also president of Prime Oil Company and Later North Texas Company. James died April 05, 1966 in Arlington, Texas
 

Children of JAMES WILEY and JULIA PHILLIPS are:

 i. MARGARET LEE WILEY, d. January 1992, Denton, Texas.
        Margaret was a Professorof English at the University of Texas at Arlington.

 ii. AUTREY NELL WILEY, b. May 27, 1901, Denton, Texas; d. May 28, 1990, Denton, Texas.
        Autrey Nell was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Head of the English Department in Texas Women's
        University.
