ALVA LAWRENCE COCHRAN
(1876-1944)

Alva Lawrence Cochran (John Wesley, Charles Wesley, Robert) was born 20 May 1876 in Spring, Harris County, Texas, and died 12 Jun 1944 in Freeport, Brazoria County, Texas. A. L. taught school in Sweeny and in Velasco, Texas. He married Celestine Boudreaux 01 Oct 1916 in Spring, Harris County, Texas, daughter of Francois Boudreaux and Marie Aspasie Arceneaux. Celestine "Cess" was born 07 Feb 1892 in Spring, Harris County, Texas, and died 19 Jun 1982 in Clute, Brazoria County, Texas. The Cochrans operated Cochran's Grocery in Velasco, Texas from 1930-1942. He served as City Secretary of Velasco for the last year of his life.

"FUNERAL SERVICES FOR A. L. COCHRAN HELD TUESDAY
Prominent Resident of Velasco For 20 Years Was City Secretary
Funeral services for A. L. Cochran, who was taken suddenly ill Sunday night and passed away Monday noon, were held June 13 at 3 p.m. from the First Methodist Church in Velasco with the Rev. Charles Lamb officiating. Interment was in Angleton Cemetery under the direction of Freeport Funeral Home.
Mr. Cochran, age 68, a prominent resident of Velasco for the past 20 years, was born in Spring, Texas, May 20, 1876. Prior to coming to Velasco he taught school in Sweeny and followed the same profession in Velasco for five years. He purchased the grocery store on Avenue A which bore his name and operated it for 12 years until he sold it to James Saha on September 16, 1942 and retired. Since then he has devoted much of his time to his yard and garden, being an ardent victory gardener.
In April 1943, Mr. Cochran was elected city secretary and has served in that capacity for the past year. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Knights of Pythias.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Celeste Cochran; two daughters, Misses Lenelle and Nadine; four brothers, E. A., of Houston; W. W. of Florence, Arizona; Charles, of Bertram; and E. E., of Navasota; and one sister, mrs. Ola Siddall, of Anderson, Texas.
Pallbearers were J. W. Royalty, K. W. Johnston, J. R. Garrett, H. M. Walters, L. N. Skinner, and J. D. Priestly."
